It is a narrative about the life of a young African American girl. It involves the feelings that one developes about feeling like a second class citizen from one's earliest awareness. It seems to me like a fairly sophisticated and nuanced work for a first novel. I think I should add I also purchased the audiobook which was narrated by the author. The audiobook also includes an author's note at the end, explaining some of the work. I read the work and listened to the author narrate her own writing. I feel this greatly enhanced the reading experience and I really appreciated and enjoyed this experience.I have made a point of studying African American Literature, not exclusively, but nonetheless,deliberately. This novel puts me in mind of elements of several African American Novels written previous to this one, which I have already read.It reminds me in ways of "Native Son" by Richard Wright, but "The Bluest Eye" is less bitter and angry, while remaining just as poignant. Parts of "Native Son" was almost too painful for me to read, but I forced my way through it.It reminds me, in part, of "The Street" by Ann Petry. "The Bluest Eye" is more sophisticated and artistic. I like both of these novels equally.It reminds me, in part, of "Lolita" by Vladimir Nabokov. "Lolita" is not an African American novel. I don't wish to risk being a "spoiler" so I don't want to go into too much detail. However I found "The Bluest Eye" to be more sympathetic to the young lady in question than "Lolita". Just like "Native Son" was too angry for me, I found "Lolita" repugnant. I do not feel that way about "The Bluest Eye". Perhaps that is because "The Bluest Eye" was authored by a female. I am not sure...The first novel I read by Toni Morrison is "Song of Solomon". I read that after reading about that novel in a book "How to Read and Why" by Harold Bloom. I found that novel too stylized and sophisticated for me to fully appreciate. Therefore I decided to start back at the beginning of Toni Morrison's novels and work my way back to "Song of Solomon". I am very glad I did. Thank You...2 of 2 people found the following review helpful.A Tragic Tale Not For The Faint of Heart, But Definitely An Entry Level Book if Interested in Toni MorrisonBy Amari SaliI read this book out of curiosity because I see the name "Toni Morrison" every now and then and when she got a medal from Obama I thought "why not" Now, though the book is written well, has characters fully fleshed out and the story is tragically beautiful, the visuals your mind can make from Morrison trying to make tragedy poetic is almost frightening. Though such a statement is more a compliment than a critique. I must say this book is not something for the curious but those who are looking to really get to understand black culture's tainted vision of itself in its own, and others, eyes. Not to forget to mention, hear a story that will not hold back just because someone is young and naive. You will be given raw lives where there is no clear villain or heroine, just situations often handled badly.3 of 3 people found the following review helpful.not a lightweight textBy smoochesread this novel when it was first released. wanted to read it again. at first reading, I was blown away, because prior to the seventies a black female author was rare to non-existent. black males wrote tons of non-fiction, but I'm a fiction lover. I'd never read a novel written in such a learned voice that told the story of so sad a character, without that old sweaty, downtrodden tone. I'd never had a brilliant af. amer. professor, not just read, but teach me to rip the novel apart, turn the characters inside out, shake them up and then put all the pieces back in place, before drawing my own conclusions.. t.,m. is one of the most gifted authors on earth. if you read this novel, I suggest that you form a group, so that they can shed light on the pieces you might miss. and, read the afterward, before the novel. it helps you to understand, why the subject was important to t.m. and why she approached it from this prospective. I can't say, " enjoy", because this novel rips your guts out; it actually hurts when you pick it up. I won't say why, but t. m. tells you in the first page or so.See all 1355 customer reviews...
