According to the Torah, the pig has cloven hooves but does not chew its cud, while the other three mammals have the reverse problem.This passage has been used both to "prove" the Torah's Divine origins and to debunk the Torah. On the one hand, some have suggested these four animals are the only ones with one of the two characteristics, and that the Torah's suggestion to this effect is proof of its truth.On the other, some nonbelievers argue that not all of these animals in fact meet both elements (or that other animals do so) and thus the Torah is false.Slifkin, an Orthodox rabbi, rejects both views.On the one hand, he notes that the hyrax and hare do not chew their cud, at least not in the sense that cows and other kosher mammals do. And to the extent that these animals' behavior resembles cud-chewing, the same can be said of other mammals not enumerated in the Torah. Thus, the Torah's statement is not accurate if it is interpreted to mean that the four animals listed are the ONLY ones that have only one of the two "kosher" characteristics.On the other hand, Slifkin responds to nonbelievers by asserting that that the Torah's claim need not be interpreted as an exclusive enumeration of "one characteristics" mammals. Perhaps the Torah specified these mammals because they were the ones most common in the Land of Israel, and thus the ones most likely to be encountered by early Jews. Slifkin backs up this view by noting that South American llamas chew their cud but lack cloven hooves, thus providing an example of a "one characteristic" mammal not mentioned in the Torah.Similarly, he argues that the fact that hyraxes do not literally chew their cud is not problematic, because the Torah often speaks in an idiomatic, non-literal fashion, and suggests that Lev. 11 may be an example of the Torah speaking in terms understandable to its first readers even if not literally accurate.I found this book interesting and very fair-minded due to Slifkin's willingness to ventilate counterarguments.
