LevinThe Seventh Magpie, by Lesley Ann Sharrock defies categorization. It seems to be a hybrid between science fiction and dystopian fiction. The actions take place in three different time periods, early 17th century Wales, late 20th century England and Wales, and late 21st century Australia, a futuristic dystopia. The book begins in early 17th century Wales with the burning of a woman accused of being a witch. The woman, Mair, left two orphans to be raised by her sister. To varying degrees, Mair's descendants exhibit psychic powers and "second sight." In the mid twentieth century, one of her descendants, Helen, is born out of wedlock and given up for adoption. She is raised by a Liverpool couple. Helen's childhood is replete with dreams and signs that she cannot interpret. Eventually she marries a handsome wannabe actor and has a child. When her marriage fails, she begins to seek out her birth family and her roots. In the process she is confronted by a talking Magpie who tries to persuade her to do its bidding.Where does this Magpie come from For that we must look one hundred years into the future, around the year 2060. The world, as we know it has been virtually destroyed by a religious sect called the "Believers." Evidently a Christian sect gone utterly awry, the Believers have taken over much of the world and rule by violence and chaos. Their Leader, Matteus Orlansky, began their path to ascendancy in 2020 by blowing up Liverpool. There is still some opposition. Centered in Australia the non-believers cling to the technology eschewed by believers and form a desperate plan to send a squadron back to the past to capture Orlansky before he can set off his first bomb. Unfortunately their vessel shoots past its target time and ends up in the early 17th century. There are only two survivors, Jeena Roberts and Doc.The non-believers then follow up this abortive mission by sending an animatron, in the form of a Magpie back to the past age where Jeena and Doc have been stranded. Unfortunately, Doc has died of plague and Jeena has just given birth to his child, so the Magpie is unable to convince Jeena to co-operate with him in getting back to the year 2061. The baby would not survive the journey. The Magpie, which is virtually indestructible and immortal alters its mission and follows Jeena's descendants into the 20th century until he locates one who might be persuaded to alert the authorities to the evil intentions of Orlansky. That would be Helen.Sharrock's book is well written, engaging and very creative. The constant back and forth in time may be a bit jarring for the reader and it may be difficult to sort out all the complexities. Nothing is really resolved in the end, something that may leave some readers unsatisfied.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. This Bird Will FlyBy Kindle CustomerThe Seventh Son. Seventh Seal. Seventh Magpie, that legendary mischievous creature. From the moment you read the title, you know you're in for something mystical and spiritual, and Ms. Sharrock doesn't disappoint. At the same time, the book is firmly placed at the center of the human heart. No frothy, bubbly faerie stuff here. The book spans four centuries--1606 to 2060--opening with a Welsh witch burning, then jumping to a post-apocalyptic time travel adventure, then returning to times in between. We soon realize we're following the descendants of that original witch through time and the world--oh, and the descendants of her parents, too, who are not exactly 17th century folks. The central focus eventually settles on the 1980's and Helen, a woman truly caught in the middle. She begins to realize her paranormal abilities, fights them, but eventually follows her visions, and is left with the burden of knowledge of the spellbinding past and present as well as the armageddon future. And she has to decide what she can or should do to stop it all from happening. And the magpie Well, he's been there all along. Watching, delivering messages, waiting for the moment. And of course, we're waiting, too, wondering what that moment is and what will happen when it comes. How can we have a 400-year-old magpie I wouldn't want to rob you of the experience of discovering that by reading this delicious adventure for yourself. Follow this magpie to his hidden treasure.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful.Time very well spentBy Jack TeeterThere is no real monetary expense for a Kindle book, what one invests is one's time. This is especially true for a work that embraces three time periods with three sets of characters to be brought to life. Reading "The Seventh Magpie" is time very well spent.I found myself so captivated by the characters and the authenticity of the settings that I enjoyed sorting through the very complex storyline. In the final analysis, the reader is left to contemplate a dilemma.President Hollister, from 2060 gives us this quote: "Nobody learns from history," he says. "But only a bloody deluded fool tries to change it!"Helen, from 1986, refers to her direct lineage to a time traveler from the 1600's in her diary: "...any principle, had any ever existed, about changing time would have been already broken."Great fun, this!Lesley Ann Sharrock pens a rich, captivating, compelling tale in "The Seventh Magpie".See all 7 customer reviews...
