There are those who think this type of story is a bit shopworn, and I think future reviews might criticize it for this, but the author clearly states what type of story this is, so anyone looking for something else is free to do so. I happen to like a good DD-esque story and argue that rather than shopworn, it’s a classic of the fantasy genre. The pacing was perfect, not slow and plodding but not so fast I couldn’t keep track of what was happening, and it was just about the right length. The threats the characters faced were credible threats – the dark lord’s minions posed actual, serious challenges to them, and the fights between the adventurers and the minions were pretty evenly matched; things were anything but easy for our protagonists. Most of the questions were answered, but others were not, and it’s pretty clear a sequel is planned. It does have some of the issues many debut novels do (including mine, no doubt). Some aspects of the writing could be polished up a bit. There were some redundancies in some descriptions, as well as some contradictions. It could be a bit leaner. For example, instead of saying “dark, wet earth” one could simple say “mud.” There were some issues with telling rather than showing – instead of saying the adventure changed the characters, show how it changed them through things like dialogue, or how a character who lacked confidence about something at the start of the adventure was solidly confident about it at the end, or how something that once seemed important was now trivial. There were a few formatting issues, places where new paragraphs should have started but didn’t.Overall, it’s a good story and I recommend it to anyone who likes a good fantasy adventure tale, well-paced and fun. For me, at least, a DD type story is quite nostalgic, bringing back memories of games I played as a kid (with all the classic monsters and storylines), games that set my own mind to creating worlds and peopling it with characters to have adventures of their own. I think anyone who enjoys role playing games, whether they’re video or the ones from my day (paper, pencil, and dice), will enjoy this story.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. An Action-Packed and Wonderful Debut Novel!By Susan BartonThe Dark Forest is a medieval-style fantasy novel that follows the story of three Meadow Haven friends, Roki, Dax and Leena, who enjoy venturing into the nearby forest in search of adventure. As the trio of adventurers gain more experience they also become more confident in their fighting skills. When an appealing bounty is offered as a reward Roki, Dax and Leena eagerly accept the risky assignment. It soon becomes clear that this mission is unlike anything the three friends have attempted before and they each find themselves in grave danger.Much of the story centers on this one bounty quest in particular. However, what starts out as a mission to collect a reward soon turns into something entirely different. Roki, Dax and Leena are offered a challenge more important and much more dangerous than any other they’ve ever experienced up to that point. Since there’s so much at stake, the trio move forward to finish what they started while facing the very real possibility that they might not all make it out alive. The Dark Forest is an action-packed and emotionally charged novel suitable for readers of any age. Although this book can certainly be enjoyed by adults, it’s written in a way that should greatly appeal to teens, especially since the protagonists are teens themselves.David Brogdon is an author who understands his characters and he does a wonderful job of capturing the emotions, mannerisms and dialogue of teens. There’s nothing worse than reading a YA novel that’s centered around teens, but misses its mark entirely. This author knows his audience and it shows. The writing in this book is nicely developed, especially for a debut novel written by a self-published author. It’s edited quite well. The author’s style is intelligent, compelling and engaging. It’s clear that a lot of thought and effort has gone into The Dark Forest. David Brogdon is an author I would recommend to fans of ya fantasy in particular. This is a book with the potential to become a popular book series. I look forward to reading more from this author.3 of 3 people found the following review helpful.I needed to catch my breath after each action scene!By Slugpuppy3What an incredibly exciting debut novel! The action scenes drew me in so closely that I needed to catch my breath at the end of each one but they just kept on coming. Next time give your characters a break so the reader can have one, too. A few editorial mistakes and an ending that went a little too long ( I would have stopped after "...source of its dark magic" but overall a terrific fantasy action book. I loved your well developed heroes, Dax, Leena and Roki.See all 9 customer reviews...
